Each year, The Game Awards is held to honor the achievements of the best video games of that year. The Game Awards 2022 was no different than the rest. The brilliant ceremony continued for 3 hours until the very last couple of seconds when the iconic event met with a bizarre ending. This stole the media’s attention and the matter became highlighted.
The Game Awards 2022 – The GOTY Award Winner?
The Game Awards 2022 took place on December 8th at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. Geoff Keighley, the founder of The Game Awards and just like every Game Awards show, himself hosted the much-anticipated event.
Apart from the exciting awards, the show had many other unique surprises up its sleeves as well. The invited audience was met with several new game announcements, including Death Stranding 2, Final Fantasy 16, and Judas. Many nominated games won awards and God of War Ragnarök took the lead by claiming 6 out of 11 awards for which it was nominated!
However, the Elden Ring had the privilege of winning the ultimate Game Of The Year (GOTY) Award. Moreover, Elden Ring also bagged 3 other game awards for which it was nominated:
- Best Game Direction Award
- Best Role-Playing Award
- Best Art Direction Award
There was a total of 31 award categories. Click here to see them all.
The Intruder at The Game Awards 2022
Toward the conclusion of the award show, The Elden Ring director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, gave an emotional speech via a translator. He promised to bring in new content for the Elden Ring (of course, via DLC game expansions.).
When he concluded his speech, however, a strange man snuck up from behind the FromSoftware team towards the microphone.
What he said was totally absurd, “Hey! My turn. Real quick, I want to thank everybody and say that I think I want to nominate this award to my Reformed Orthodox rabbi Bill Clinton. Thank you, everybody.”
The most shocking aspect of this is that no one noticed him. Not even the developer team noticed him on the stage! He stood there dead silent and waited for the right moment.
He managed to sneak past the security as well by somehow perfectly blending in with the FromSoftware team. When the Elden Ring developer team was on stage, he stood still and quietly at the back.
When he ended his seconds-long strange speech, it sent shockwaves across the audience that resulted in some unintended confused applause.
The security soon reached the stage and escorted him out. Shortly later, in a tweet, Geoff Keighley said that the intruder has been arrested. However, the reports from the LAPD confirmed that while a report was indeed made but there was no arrest.
Who was that Intruder?
The real intent behind the intruder’s statement is still unknown. His identity has come to light and it is revealed that his name is Matan. A few years back, he waved a “free Hong Kong” at an NBA game and made several commentary videos related 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests. No insidious political motives behind his irrational statement have been discerned as of now.
People’s Reactions to the Intruder
Social media being social media, a lot of different reactions from online people surfaced. Some found this ridiculously funny while others were rightfully concerned. They argued this could have been fatal if the individual was armed. Regarding this, The Game Awards have assured users that in the future there will be added security and no such bizarre event would take place. Below are some of the reactions from people:
